Another form in which I integrated myself into the Hispanic culture was through my service learning experience at The Agriculture and Land-Based Training Association (ALBA). With my classmate Ben Van Der Kar, I spent numerous hours on the farmlands helping in any way I could. Located in Salinas and surrounded by open farmlands, I was able to assimilate myself into the working class in the fields, and utilize my Spanish in a real world setting while sharing compassion by meeting new people. I remember one moment specifically working next to and pulling weeds with a kid no older than 12, but he was working with his whole family and helping out because it was needed. This image of social responsibility is obviously different culture to culture, and it would have been hard to learn about it if I didn't experience it first hand. My service learning class really taught me the importance of justice for all no matter what race or color of skin one has, and that diversity is a great thing in this country and should be celebrated. El pueblo unido jamás será vencido.
